Particle Collection Technology

Particle Collection Technology

Volume Particle Collection Overview

Aerosols from natural, anthropogenic and industrial sources—as well as airborne chemical and biological warfare agents—are a significant threat to human health and safety. Effective sampling and collection of aerosol particles is a critical first step in the detection and identification of these hazards. Identification methods such as immunological or nucleic acid assays typically require the aerosol particles to be delivered in a liquid medium. Biotechnix has filled the need for a “front-end” device that collects these aerosols and delivers them in a concentrated suspension or solution.

Aerosol sampling is especially challenging in windy, misty, dusty or rainy locations, and can be complicated when the aerosol sampling device is mounted on a mobile vehicle such as a truck, airplane, marine vessel, or riverine vehicle. Biotechnix has developed a novel aerosol sampling inlet which is insensitive to wind direction and speed, and is weather and wave tolerant.

Volume Particle Collection Technology Applications

The Biotechnix aerosol-to-liquid collection and delivery system accepts raw or concentrated aerosols and delivers aerosol particles in small droplets of fluid. This can serve as the front end to a number of biochemical or physical detection platforms in the security, military, and biomedical fields, as well as in environmental and industrial sampling and monitoring applications.

Surface Particle Collection Overview

Effective collection of particles from surfaces is of major importance in detecting trace explosives residues on vehicles, in airport luggage, in mail, and in cargo. It is also vital for effective screening of personnel for concealed explosives, and environmental monitoring. Non-contact sampling allows for interrogation of complex geometries, such as inside corners, cracks and crevices that may collect particulates.

Biotechnix has optimized technology for handheld, high-volume, non-contact sampling of trace explosives and has validated its performance at the Transportation Security Laboratory with Smiths Detection and with Morpho Detection (now Rapiscan) detectors. During sampling, liberated particles are collected onto a custom-designed coupon capable of capturing particles generally larger than 10 microns and holding multiple samples.

Surface Particle Collection Technology Applications

Biotechnix surface particle collection technology can be applied in a variety of applications where fast screening of large surface areas for trace explosive substances is desirable, including: personnel screening (clothing and shoes), carry-on baggage inspection, cargo inspection (maritime, air cargo, or palletized cargo) and other checkpoint applications. Biotechnix technology is also relevant for environmental and industrial sampling and monitoring applications.
